You might think of your somewhat crooked teeth as more of an aesthetic concern than a dental problem. However, if they overlap, it can be harder to keep them clean, which in turn increases the likelihood of developing cavities, gum disease, or other oral issues.
Your dentist can straighten your smile with Invisalign, which relies on transparent trays that fit snugly over your teeth to shift them. But you must care for them correctly for them to fulfill their functions. Continue reading to learn about 3 do’s and don’ts to help you care for your clear aligners!
#1: DO Follow Directions
Many patients prefer Invisalign over traditional orthodontics because the smooth plastic material is much more comfortable and discreet than metallic brackets and wires. Plus, the trays are completely removable, so they don’t impact your daily habits and routines, making it a less invasive option.
With that said, you must wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours daily to keep your pearly whites from shifting back to their starting places. This can potentially add additional weeks to your treatment timeline to address. Following your dentist’s wear-time directions can help you stay on track!
#2: DON’T Eat with Your Trays In
People with braces must adhere to a lengthy list of dietary restrictions to avoid anything to hard, crunchy, or sticky that might hurt their dental gear. Meanwhile, your clear trays are removable so that you can enjoy all your favorite meals without worrying you might harm them.
But to keep them safe, you must remove them to eat or drink anything other than cool or room-temperature water. This is because the transparent plastic isn’t intended to withstand the force of biting or chewing, and can be damaged by different foods you eat. Not only that, but overly hot liquids, like coffee, tea, or soup, might warp them so they no longer fit correctly.
#3: DO Clean Your Aligners Consistently
Have you noticed that your clear aligners have started to appear a little foggy or have a darker tint? This can sometimes happen if bacteria in your mouth form plaque on their surfaces, which can accumulate and leave them looking dirty or discolored. Not only that, but they can trap particles against your teeth and gums that attract germs, which in turn contribute to tooth decay and gum disease.
To keep your trays clean, remove them at least twice daily to thoroughly brush all sides with a soft-bristle brush and a clear dish soap or non-abrasive toothpaste. Then, be sure to also brush and floss your teeth so you’re putting them into a clean mouth when you’re done washing them.
