How Invisalign Works

Hand holding an Invisalign aligner

Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign treatment uses smooth, clear plastic aligners to place a gentle, strategic amount of pressure onto the teeth to gradually shift them into their ideal positions. Every two weeks, you’ll graduate to the next series of trays in your treatment, and every six to eight weeks, you’ll return to our office for a quick check-in visit. Following your check-in, our team will provide you with the next sets of aligners in your treatment, and this process will continue until you reach your final alignment goals.

Who Can Invisalign Help?

If you would prefer to straighten your teeth with comfortable, convenient, and barely noticeable aligners, we have good news: Invisalign is quite versatile! In fact, it has helped more than 17 million patients with the following orthodontic problems:

Crowded Teeth

If there isn’t enough room in your mouth for your teeth to sit in their perfectly aligned positions, they will crowd together. While this may not seem like an issue, it can make maintaining a healthy smile difficult. That’s why we recommend exploring your treatment options. If you’re a candidate for Invisalign, then we can guide your teeth into their ideal positions without metal brackets and wires!

Gaps Between Teeth

If you have a large space between your two front teeth or several smaller spaces throughout your mouth, you might be wondering if Invisalign can fix teeth gaps. Good news: the answer is “yes!” The best way to find out if you’re a candidate for clear aligners is by scheduling a consultation at our office so we can get an in-depth understanding of your dental history, needs, and goals.

Overbite

Although your upper teeth should sit in front of your lower ones, they shouldn’t extend far beyond them. If they do, then several problems can arise, including trouble enunciating clearly. While traditional braces were once the only solution, Invisalign has proven to be an effective option over the last several decades as well. So, don’t just assume your only path to a straighter, healthier smile involves metal!

Underbite

Of course, some patients are struggling with the opposite problem: their lower teeth sit in front of their upper ones. If that’s the case for you, then you may have an underbite. Fortunately, like the other bite problems on this list, Invisalign is usually an option. If you are interested in finding out if that’s the case for you, then take the next step: schedule a consultation with us!

Crossbite

Do some of your upper teeth sit behind your lower ones? If so, you may have a crossbite, which is an orthodontic problem that can negatively impact your self-esteem and increase your risk of dental damage. So, don’t wait – give us a call to schedule a consultation! During your visit, we will complete a comprehensive oral exam and determine if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign.

Open Bite

The final orthodontic problem on this list is an open bite, which is when there is a space between the upper and lower teeth that prevents a patient from biting down all the way. Oftentimes, Invisalign clear aligners are an option. If your case is more complex, then we may need to include additional orthodontic accessories in your treatment plan, like rubber bands.

Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign offers a number of unique benefits that make it a top choice for orthodontic treatment among patients. If you are considering clear aligners for yourself and are interested in learning about the perks that come with them (outside of the fact that they are basically invisible), then this next section is for you!

Enhanced Comfort

One complaint many patients with traditional braces have is that the metal brackets and wires lead to considerable soft tissue irritation. Fortunately, patients with Invisalign don’t deal with the same discomfort because the aligners are custom-made from smooth plastic. So, outside of temporary soreness from the movement of your teeth, your journey to a straighter smile will be painless!

Easy to Brush and Floss

Another considerable benefit of Invisalign: you don’t need to completely alter your dental care regimen or buy new, expensive oral hygiene products. In fact, there’s a good chance that you already have everything you need to take care of your teeth and your trays! The key to maintaining a healthy smile and stain-free aligners is consistency, so do your best to incorporate good habits into your daily routine.

Shorter Average Treatment Timeline

Did you know that the average treatment timeline with Invisalign is only 12-18 months? That’s a fraction of the time that traditional braces take (which is typically 2-3 years). So, if you want a straight smile for an upcoming event, like your wedding, you should definitely consider clear aligners, especially since they won’t draw any unwanted attention to your smile during the treatment process.

No Dietary Restrictions

In an effort to reduce the chances of a bracket or wire breaking, patients with traditional braces are asked to avoid several foods, including whole apples, hard pretzels, and popcorn. The same dietary restrictions aren’t given to patients with Invisalign for one simple reason: the aligners are removable. So, as long as you take them off before eating and don’t overindulge on cavity-causing foods, you can enjoy all of your favorites throughout the teeth-straightening process.

Able to Treat a Wide Range of Orthodontic Problems

One of the biggest misconceptions about Invisalign is that the aligners can only fix mild spacing and crowding issues. The reality is that they can fix overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites, too! So, if you’ve always wanted a straighter smile, but you thought traditional braces were your only option, don’t hesitate to schedule a consultation with our Frankfort dental team so we can learn all about your dental needs and smile goals.
